We need to talk about magazines:

By now, we are all aware of the impending doom of print media eventually being overthrown by digital. The inevitable shift from print to digital has already hit the newspaper business hard. However, according to a recent survey: “when it comes to our magazines, we read more, read longer and subscribe more often to print than digital” (Pilcher, 2016). Freeport Press recently conducted a survey to magazine readers in North Americans and had an total of 692 respondents which had very interesting results.
To say the least, the study was very surprising. First, 75 % of respondents claimed they had read a print copy of a magazine while only 39 % had read a digital magazine during that month. Perhaps even more surprising is that 67 % of people subscribe to a print issue and only 23 % subscribe to a digital edition. The survey concluded that, “the results were clear: people are more engaged with their print magazines than their digital ones” (Pilcher, 2016).
So, what is going on here? In order to better understand why printed issues are still winning the battle over digital, I chose to examine one of the most notable fashion magazines ever: Vogue. In a strict article to article comparison, I found that headlines were not altered for SEO purposes and the photo’s remained the same throughout print and digital editions. The content was the same; however, the digital actually offered more extras, such as videos and behind the scenes previews.
Yet, people still clearly have a preference for print issues. Why? I said it once and I’ll say it again. Haptics, which is essentially the study of communication through touch. Shout it from the rooftops! People love the gloss, texture, colour and overall sensation of a physical copy of a magazine.
There you have it, yet another emotional win for print media!
